Katy Loffman, Digital publishing consultant

About Me

I am a Digital Publishing Consultant, advising publishers, digital producers and literary agents on all aspects of digital publishing.

I take a personal and professional approach, built on many years of experience in publishing. My consultancy work is underpinned by the practical work of producing and selling paperbacks and ebooks through Dandelion Digital, managing the whole process, from manuscript to bookshop.

I work with a network of hand-picked expert partners, and together we cover most aspects of publishing. This enables my clients to reap the benefits of the digital age, not only for their books, but for the process of publishing itself.

I enjoy the challenge of finding ways to do new things, including the seemingly impossible.

My projects vary in size from a single book, to industry-wide initiatives that change people's working lives for the better.

My work involves drawing up contracts that are fit for purpose in this digital world, mastering the dark art of metadata, or helping to build new systems for clearing rights.

Some recent Rights Solutions projects

  • Acquiring book and audiobook titles for a children's app — drawing up the necessary contracts and negotiating with publishers.
  • PLSClear, a website that enables authors and editors to avoid copyright infringement when quoting from other people's work.
  • Drawing up and negotiating the necessary contracts for a publisher's entire list to go online.
  • Negotiating an app deal for a series of children's picture books.
  • Research into image licensing by museums and galleries, in conjunction with Kingston University.

My clients include trade publishers (adult's and children's), academic and professional publishers, literary agents, and publishing-industry bodies.

I take a keen interest in copyright, and other legal and technical developments that affect digital publishing from the rise of virtual reality to the Government's new copyright regulations.

I graduated from UCL with an MA in Digital Publishing and for 3 years, was a visiting lecturer on City University's MA in Publishing, teaching on rights, copyright and digital publishing.

I am one of the i-Publishing Consultants team, which enables me to take on larger projects, with the support of my i-Publishing colleagues. I am an affiliate member of the Publishers Association.
